I hail from a small county in the mountains of Eastern KY, where people still depend on the traditions of times past. The knowledge of our ancestors have been passed down by word of mouth for many generations. This knowledge enables my family to be sustainable or “live off the land”.
We farm, hunt for game, grow herbs and search for wild edible plants. All of which are then preserved by canning, drying, or freezing. It is a lifestyle that not many often do. The work is hard but the benefits are immeasurable.
As a Wildlife Woman, my purpose is to inspire, educate and encourage other women to participate in anything pertaining to the outdoors. I have a unique perspective, as related to my family’s sustenance lifestyle. So when I sponsored the event, Spill the Beans, I was excited to find others interested in survival skills!
We discussed holding a class on identifying the different plants in our area that can be used for medicinal purposes. Such as ginseng, blood root, yellow root, dandelions, mullein, lamb’s quarter, yarrow and plantain just to name a few! This class would then proceed to identify the uses of each plant and how to do them at home.
Wildlife Women is about all aspects of the outdoors. There is a place for every woman, of every experience level and every walk of life. Wildlife Women wants to expand your boundaries, help you learn about how to connect to the outdoors, and to have fun!
